I really can't help myself, can I?

This is for those who are against Mary Sues in every way, shape, and form, no matter how people on this site try to rationalize it.

People say it is a learning experience. Learning experience as in, learning from your mistakes? That can be good, but we must realize that making a Mary Sue in any circumstance is still a mistake, no matter how you try to dress it up. Being proud of that mistake is truly sad.

Saying that creating a Mary Sue-like character is all right to start out with is like saying it's okay to start your art career drawing animu art, when you should start to at least tackle the real way in which the human body is proportioned. In writing, you need to aim higher than making a character out of your fantasies. Study other characters, study people in real life, and work with that.

When you want to create a believable character that people will care about and not roll their eyes at, you can't start with a self-insert/perfect character that you wish to be the most 'awesomest person evoh'. First off, no one is interested in reading your egotistical stories about your fandom self. Secondly, you can't just add on the good things about your character without any bad. Being 'clumsy' is not a character flaw. Having a bad temper is an overrated flaw as well. Don't load on the powers and awesomesauce without realizing that you're creating someone that readers should level with somehow.

Think I have no right to say what I'm saying? I've created a self-insert and a Mary Sue before, and started out drawing anime (after stick figures). If people get too butthurt on this stamp, I might disable comments.

Now rewrite! REWRITE, AND MARY SUE NO MORE!

You should start a weekly newscast on here with a new rant about how we can all improve!

Hahaha, I've always got stuff to rant about, but I think the majority of character creating that needs to be said I summed up in an interactive Flash I put up here. Anything more detailed than that is when you seek out sites that have pros talking about that kind of thing.

Turn and turn and turn again.
You see the what but not the when.
Remedy and wrong entwine,
And so they form a single vine.

Thanks Kit! :D
